Master of Science in Information Systems (MSc. IS)

The Master of Science in Information Systems (MIS program) offers excitement and challenges for the information age. This program focuses on applying information technology to improve the performance of people in organization. It mainly deals with the management of information systems with focus on a number of areas such as business process management systems, computer security, systems modeling and data management. This program is a two year modular program that runs in weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). The program is taught by staff from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics Sciences. Additionally, staff from industry provides guest lectures to help students visualize the applicability of classroom concepts in the real life of information systems.

Overall Aim

To graduate students who will have knowledge and skills necessary to meet the increasing demand for professionals who can effectively handle the technical, social, and organisational aspects of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Objectives

The MIS aims to:

1. Build human resource capacity in information systems discipline required in both the public and private sectors, especially in universities;
2. Address the increasing demand for information systems training at Post graduate degree level;
3. Develop professionals with theoretical and practical skills in the ICT sector

Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the MIS programme should be prepared to provide leadership in the Information Systems field. Graduates will have skills, knowledge, and values to:

1. Integrate IS and business foundations.
2. Develop secure information systems
3. Analyse requirements for system development
4. Extract meaningful patterns from knowledge-based information systems

Job prospects

The career paths open to graduates of the MS in Information Systems include both technical and management positions. Technical positions include: Systems Analyst, Data Administrator, Information Architect, Database Administrator, Systems Architect, Decision Analyst, Data Warehouse Administrator, Database Programmer, Web-based Information Systems Designer/Programmer, Information Engineer, and Knowledge Engineer.

Admission Requirement

The programme is targeted at graduates with at least a second class lower degree in Information Systems or Computer Science or software engineering or Information Technology or computer engineering, or related discipline from a recognized University/ Institution.

Tuition fees

The MIS program is a privately sponsored program and therefore before enrollment it is important that tuition fees are payed by the students to the university. Ugandan students will pay tuition fees totaling to Four Million and Eight Hundred thousand shillings (4,800,000 Ug. shs.) per year. Foreign students will pay an equivalent tuition fees and practicum fees in USD.
